Easy Pictures to Draw Pictures to Draw

I'm not the most talented person when it comes to drawing. While I do enjoy easy crafts, I'm not the most creative person on the block. I can't look at an empty room and visualize it decorated but I do love directed drawing! Maybe it's because it makes me feel like I know how to draw easy pictures. Or maybe it's the smile on my students' faces when they realize what they've just drawn. Either way, if you haven't tried it, you definitely should!

What is Directed Drawing?

Directed drawings are a guided, step-by-step approach to drawing something. Directed drawing directions can be done orally by the teacher, through videos or paper. Typically in an elementary classroom, kids are given directions on how to draw easy things. That way, even the most reluctant artist can complete a picture successfully.

Why Directed Drawing?

When I started teaching Kindergarten, I noticed that children are constantly asked to draw pictures that match their learning. Even though most children love art, drawing, and coloring, I noticed that some children just felt anxious about drawing. They didn't feel confident enough. They didn't feel like they were good enough to draw.

I was constantly hearing "But Ms. S. I can't draw" or "I don't know how". And we all know how that negative talk can affect students' learning and behavior towards school.

I remember feeling the exact same way when I was in school all those years ago. I remember dreading going to art class because I just didn't know how to draw anything easy or hard.

So, I knew I had to do something to help ALL of my students foster a love of the arts, a love of drawing. That is why I started using directed drawing in my classroom.

How to draw made easy:

I can think of many reasons why you should teach your students how to draw easy step by step pictures. Here are a few:

Learning how to draw easy pictures is so much fun!

Teaching your students how to draw easy pictures can be a lot of fun. Watching them find their artistic size is just priceless. I love directed drawing because it provides students with tons of opportunities to explore their creative side. Even your most reluctant or least artistic student will find their way and love learning how to draw easy and cute things!

Learning outcome

Most of my directed drawing activities are linked to a learning outcome. I love teaching my students how to draw easy and cool things step by step and then give them a writing prompt that relates to the picture.

Of course, there are days when I take the time simply to teach the kids how to draw easy images just because. But for the most part, I think it's important to connect it to content by adding a writing piece or closing up a social studies unit.

Listening and Following Directions

When learning how to draw easy things step by step, students are practicing following directions. Students are motivated to listen to and follow instructions. Students quickly find out that paying attention is an important requirement when it comes to directed drawing. They know that if they don't listen, they will miss a step, and the drawing may not look right. This can work as a motivator for children to practice listening to and following directions. And what student can't benefit from some extra listening practice?

Confidence Booster

Directed drawing can be a great way to improve students' confidence. With directed drawing, students are challenged to draw different lines, shapes, and images, which will provide them with opportunities to practice fine motor skills. This can, in turn, help them gain confidence in their work and abilities.

Using directed drawing will produce great results and, as a result your students may end up calling themselves artists.

How to Use Directed Drawing in the Classroom

Following directions

A directed drawing activity can simply be an activity of following directions. If your students are struggling to follow directions, you can teach them how to draw easy penguin, for example. By teaching them step by step what to draw, you'll be teaching them the importance of listening and following directions.

Link it to your theme or unit

To tell you the truth, you can use a directed drawing activity to show your students how to draw easy stuff and link it to any content you may be working on. If you've been talking about the winter, you can show them how to draw easy snowman. If you've just finished a unit of study on animals, you can pull out a directed drawing and show kids how to draw easy and cute animals.

The possibilities are endless!

Use writing prompts

I love using creative writing in my classroom. I always feel that students do better with writing when they're given a chance to illustrate their own story.

This year, I vowed to do at least one directed drawing a week and have students complete at least one writing prompt about the drawing. So far, it's been working wonderfully!

For the month of January, students already learned how to draw easy snowman and mitten. Next, they will learn how to draw easy penguin. Students have loved learning how to draw easy pictures and are look forward to our directed drawing days!

Sequencing Activity

An alternative to the writing prompt, or as a pre-activity, is using a picture sequencing activity followed by the directed drawing. I usually use this kind of activity in the beginning of the school year when students are still pre-writers.
